Partnerships for the goals
Compliance and risk management – responsibility is not a question of regulations
For us, compliance and risk management do not mean control, but sustainability. The aim is to make the company more resilient, create room for manoeuvre and strengthen trust in the long term. This aligns perfectly with our self-concept as a family business with more than 100 years of history.
With the Code of Conduct (CoC) we have created a common foundation of values. It applies to the entire JACOB Group worldwide – without exceptions or volume limits. It is also binding for our suppliers. "It's not about ticking off rules. It's about getting better together," says our sustainability expert Lisa Kleemann, describing the idea behind the CoC.
We pay attention to transparency, social and environmental compatibility and responsibility. And this not only applies externally, but internally too: our own strategic values serve as guidance in everyday life – those who work at JACOB make decisions as if it were their own company.
Compliance means adhering to the rules of the game – whether legal, contractual or moral. We have stood for reliability and responsibility for generations, so acting with integrity is a matter of course for us. Lisa Kleemann explains what this looks like in practice: "We rely on different formats to embed compliance: training, management briefings, e-learning. Our phishing simulations are particularly popular. They make risks tangible – and sensitise our employees to take a close look at their emails."
We have set up an internal reporting centre to record and transparently clarify information on possible violations of laws or regulations. Here, reports can be made anonymously, and are treated confidentially and reviewed transparently. "Every report is taken seriously," emphasises Lisa Kleemann.
Economic, ecological, technological, legal – we record risks from all areas and assess them together with the specialist departments. Our focus is not only on what is, but also on what is to come. For Lisa Kleemann, that means: "We monitor trends, exchange ideas with experts and regularly adjust our assessments." Flexibility is crucial, especially in times of rapid change. We do not see digitalisation as a risk, but as an opportunity – for data-based analyses, more efficient processes or new tools such as our PipeplannAR.
Although we are not currently subject to the Supply Chain Due Diligence Act (LkSG), we have been working intensively on this topic since 2022. Because we believe that responsibility in the supply chain is not an add-on, but part of corporate credibility. The same applies to the planned European supply chain directive (Corporate Sustainability Due Diligence Directive [CSDDD]). Lisa Kleemann: “We are prepared – and ready when the time comes.”
What our sustainability and compliance manager is particularly looking forward to in the future: "I’m looking forward to projects in which sustainability, risk management and compliance come together. Especially when we not only minimise risks or comply with regulations, but also develop real added value for the company and our environment – for example, through transparent supply chains, sustainable product development or digital solutions. This shows how strongly the topics are now interwoven and how much we can shape if we think holistically."
"For me, responsibility doesn't mean controlling the rules, but shaping the future. So that we consciously decide today how we will remain successful tomorrow."
Lisa Kleemann,
sees risks and challenges above all as opportunities
Lisa, what do you think more people should know about risk and compliance?
Risk can compliance is often equated with rules and control, but it is primarily about responsibility, foresight and certainty. Risk management helps us to see more clearly: Where could problems arise? Where can we take early countermeasures or even recognise opportunities? We work for the future viability of the company. With common sense and the aim of securing room for manoeuvre instead of restricting it.
